PhD Tips

08/02/2022

Doing a PhD is most times enjoyable. And it is even more, if one knows some life-hacks.

To start off, one should enjoy the topic.

There is some writing involved. So, let's select a few articles, see how they are written and identify the main airless in the topic. For creating academic formulations, there Manchester phrasebank. There can be an excellent paper, but the title and abstract had its impact. I find there to be some similarities worth SEO and thinking about headlines.

Also good, with different areas of writing by Purdue Owl. One of the best resources to improve English I find the epax Study Skills package. For a more rich vocabulary, there are some dictionaries: Thesaurus, Merriam-Webster. One can put into calendar a new daily word to be reminded of over the next two months by calendar notifications.

To summarise, how to write a scientific article paper. Drawn attention to by my friend and researcher. When examining other articles, don't read everything. How to read articles: abstract, summary, Ctrl+f + a keyword like "method". For searching articles, I found the most convenient way is with the Google Scholar extension. I am using it on edge, mainly because of it's snipping tool, the url pasted with a heading and imbedded highlighter (similarly to the pdf #page= parameter).

Despite science access being mostly commercialised. There are tendencies towards open access and interesting clashed with Sci-Hub and LibGen

To promote one work and activities, a personal website can be helpful. For researcher as well ResearchGate. Some inspiration by Nature. They can be done on webnode, wix, google pages etc. Subdomains are free, domain yearly cost about £10. To be keep up new trends (for mathematics) on Stackexchange.

For improving Matlab coding skills and the general coding style, I recommend (Schlömer, 2022). What R can do is well described in many books (encompasing Markdown, as well as Shiny or package creation).

One might shy away from academia because earning larger amounts elsewhere can be more impressive. Especially, when sitting the day by the computer and not meeting anyone. After work, when doing some shopping, let someone in the queue with little items in front of you. There comes a small talk naturally. Did you ever notice that you are more funny and relaxed, when telling jokes with friends than, when speaking alone. Let me reference (Přecechtěl, 2007).
